As a core facility for long-term fresh-keeping of high-end fruits and vegetables, the cost of a controlled atmosphere (CA) storage is not a fixed value but a dynamic range influenced by multiple factors. According to 2025 industry data, the cost per square meter of a CA storage typically ranges from RMB 1,300 to RMB 2,500, with some high-standard or specially configured projects costing even more. This price is significantly higher than that of ordinary cold storage, primarily because a CA storage not only maintains low temperatures but also precisely regulates oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gas components within the storage.

The primary factor affecting the cost of a CA storage is the size and structure of the storage body. The economy of scale is particularly evident in such projects. For a small CA storage of 100 square meters, the cost per square meter tends to be higher due to the higher allocation of fixed equipment costs; however, when the scale expands to over 300 square meters, the unit cost can decrease accordingly. In addition, the number of compartments within the storage directly impacts the cost. If a large space is divided into multiple independent CA rooms, although it enhances flexibility for storing multiple product varieties, it requires additional partition panels, independent airtight doors, and multiple sets of CA equipment, significantly increasing the total cost.
The selection of the CA system and refrigeration equipment is another core variable in the cost. A CA storage requires specialized equipment such as nitrogen generators, carbon dioxide scrubbers, and ethylene removal devices, which typically account for 25% to 30% of the total cost. Regarding refrigeration units, although premium brands (such as Bitzer) have an initial investment 30% to 50% higher than domestic equipment, they offer better energy efficiency ratios and lower failure rates, significantly reducing electricity expenses and product loss over the long term. Meanwhile, the thickness and material of the insulation panels are also crucial. Using high-density polyurethane insulation panels increases the initial investment but effectively reduces cold loss and energy consumption.
In addition to the aforementioned hardware configurations, construction environment and regional differences also cause cost fluctuations. For example, in southern regions with high temperature and humidity, larger refrigeration capacity and moisture-proof treatment are required, while in northern regions, enhanced frost protection and insulation are necessary. If the site is a basement or a renovated old warehouse, additional costs for waterproofing, moisture-proofing, and demolition/modification work will be incurred.

In summary, the construction of a CA storage is a long-term investment. When planning, it is advisable for investors not to blindly pursue low prices but to make precise configurations based on their storage categories, turnover requirements, and expected preservation cycles. By reasonably selecting equipment brands, optimizing the compartment layout, and emphasizing insulation and airtightness, it is possible to control initial construction costs while ensuring low energy consumption and high-quality preservation in the later stages, thereby achieving optimal economic benefits.
