How to Build a Cold Storage Room in an Existing Facility?

Building a cold storage room in an existing facility can be a challenging task, but with the right approach, it is entirely possible to complete it successfully. When installing a cold storage room in an existing building, it is important to consider the internal clear height, length, and width areas to reserve the required space.


First, the building should have sufficient height, length, and width to accommodate the refrigeration unit. The insulation panels of the cold room should be 20 cm smaller than the minimum clear dimensions of the building's interior walls to avoid partitions on the surrounding walls.


The fewer columns there are in the building, the more space there will be for the cold storage room and goods storage.


When refrigerating food, the temperature is typically between 0 and 10°C. The original floor needs to be lowered by 20 cm, the insulation panels need to be lowered by 10 cm, and the concrete floor needs to be lowered by 10 cm. For low-temperature or ultra-low-temperature refrigeration, the original ground needs to be lowered by 30 cm. If this is not possible, concrete with insulation material can be used on the existing floor, which may result in a slope at the entrance of the cold storage room, or the entire cold storage area being higher than the original floor.


When building a large cold storage room exceeding 6 meters in length, it is necessary to consider the weight of the cold room roof and the lifting capacity of the original building. The load on one square meter of the cold room ceiling is approximately 20 kg. You should also consider the weight of the refrigeration equipment, which is typically suspended below the building structure. The weight of the equipment varies from 100 to 500 kg depending on the model, and there are usually 8 to 10 suspension points, requiring sufficient strength to secure the equipment.


When building a large cold storage area exceeding 300 square meters, it is important to ensure that the building space above the cold room has sufficient height and space for workers to complete tasks safely and efficiently. The space should be at least 1.2 meters from the lowest point of the building to the top of the cold room. For larger cold storage areas exceeding 500 square meters, at least 2 meters of space should be reserved to provide adequate working space for storing materials and personnel.

Water usage for refrigeration equipment is usually not a problem. However, consideration should be given to the water used by workers for processing and cleaning inside the cold storage room. For large projects, an evaporative condenser may be required, using a mixture of air and water.
