How to Build an Air-Conditioned Cold Storage Warehouse?

Controlled atmosphere cold storage, also known as air-conditioned storage, is a preservation method for fruits and vegetables.

Under appropriate low-temperature conditions, controlled atmosphere storage creates optimal storage conditions for fruits and vegetables by adjusting the gas composition, relative humidity, carbon dioxide concentration, oxygen concentration, and ethylene concentration in the storage environment.

The effects of controlled atmosphere storage include: low-oxygen storage (generally with an oxygen content of 1%–5%) and an appropriate amount of carbon dioxide, which effectively inhibits the respiration of fruits and vegetables and reduces nutrient loss. Low oxygen and appropriate carbon dioxide concentrations also inhibit the reproduction of pathogens, thereby preventing the occurrence of certain diseases. Controlled atmosphere storage also increases the relative humidity in the storage environment to reduce transpiration of fruits and vegetables, achieving long-term preservation.

Compared with ordinary refrigeration, controlled atmosphere storage can typically extend the storage time of fruits and vegetables by 0.5 to 1 times. After fruits and vegetables are removed from controlled atmosphere storage, they maintain a "lag effect" or a prolonged dormant period. The freshness period of fruits and vegetables can be extended by 21 to 28 days, which is 3 to 4 times that of ordinary refrigeration.
