Always remember to place chilled and perishable items in the refrigerator. Frozen foods remain frozen in food service. Additionally, keeping refrigerated cabinets and freezer rooms clean, along with well-maintained commercial cold room installations, helps keep food as fresh as possible.
However, with so many types of cold storage available, which one should you choose based on your needs? In this guide, you will learn about the five main types of cold storage.

Types of Cold Storage
Cold storage is used to store items that must be kept at specified temperatures to prevent degradation or contamination. Another issue is that improper food handling can lead to spoilage, resulting in large amounts of inventory being discarded due to poor management. Different cold storage methods are used depending on the product, quantity, and storage duration. Cold storage types are categorized as follows based on their current application:
1. Bulk Cold Storage
These facilities are typically used to store specific seasonal commodities such as potatoes, apples, peppers, and more. Seasonal cold storage is an economical and eco-friendly method. In insulated tanks, the average energy produced is stored in the form of ice. During summer, it is removed as cooling water for cooling equipment, helping to reduce chiller operating time and associated electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
2. Multipurpose Cold Storage
Multipurpose cold storage units come in various styles, sizes, and power capacities. The temperature control methods of multipurpose cold storage are excellent. They allow you to maintain a specified temperature range, ensuring goods are well protected.
Small Cold Storage
Provides pre-cooling facilities for fresh fruits and vegetables, mainly used for export-oriented commodities such as grapes. Maharashtra has the highest density of these units, although this trend is spreading to neighboring Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat.
3. Frozen Food Stores
These products may be processed or unprocessed and can freeze fish, meat, poultry, dairy products, as well as processed fruits and vegetables. Cold storage has facilitated the growth and expansion of the frozen food business.
4. Mini Units/Cold Storage
Walk-in cold rooms are massive industrial-grade refrigerators designed to keep large quantities of perishable items at a constant temperature—cold room temperatures range from 0 to 25 degrees Celsius.
