Currently, cold storage insulation materials can be divided into two main categories: mainstream general-purpose types and special-scenario dedicated types, totaling 7 core types. Their respective characteristics and applicable scenarios are as follows:

I. Mainstream General-Purpose Types (Used by Over 90% of Cold Storages)
1. Polyurethane (PUR/PIR) Series (Industry First Choice)
- Forms: Available in two types: "on-site spray foam" and "prefabricated insulated panels"
- Core Performance: Thermal conductivity 0.022~0.024 W/(m·K) (excellent insulation performance), closed-cell rate ≥95%, strong moisture resistance, fire rating up to B1 (flame retardant)
- Advantages: Spray-applied type forms a seamless integral insulation layer, strong adhesion, temperature resistance covering the full range of -60℃ to 120℃, service life of 15~20 years
- Disadvantages: Higher raw material cost, strict requirements for spray application workmanship
- Applications: All types of cold storages (fresh-keeping/chilled/frozen/ultra-low temperature), pharmaceutical cold chain warehouses, large commercial cold storages; currently the mainstream choice for cold storage
2. Polystyrene Series (High Cost-Performance Option)
① EPS (Expanded Polystyrene)
- Performance: Thermal conductivity 0.038~0.042 W/(m·K), lightweight
- Advantages: Lower cost, easy to cut and install
- Disadvantages: Poor fire resistance (max B2 rating), panel joints prone to cold air leakage, average insulation performance
- Applications: Small fresh-keeping storages at 0~5℃, temporary cold storages, budget-constrained projects
② XPS (Extruded Polystyrene)
- Performance: Thermal conductivity 0.028~0.030 W/(m·K), dense structure, high compressive strength
- Advantages: Good water resistance, strong compressive strength, better insulation performance than EPS
- Disadvantages: Still has joint cold bridge issues, average fire resistance
- Applications: Medium-temperature cold storages (0~-10℃), cold storage floor insulation, seafood cold rooms
3. Rock Wool/Glass Wool (Fire-Resistant Dedicated Type)
- Performance: Thermal conductivity 0.035~0.045 W/(m·K), Class A non-combustible (absolutely fireproof)
- Advantages: Excellent fire resistance, high-temperature resistance, good durability
- Disadvantages: Extremely hygroscopic (requires strict vapor barrier), average insulation performance, dusty during installation
- Applications: Cold storages with special fire protection requirements, cold storages storing flammable/explosive materials or food additives, fire-resistant isolation zones in cold storages
II. Special-Scenario Dedicated Types
1. Vacuum Insulation Panel (VIP)
- Performance: Thermal conductivity 0.004~0.008 W/(m·K) (3 times better insulation than polyurethane)
- Advantages: Ultra-thin and highly insulating, minimal space occupation
- Disadvantages: Extremely high cost (500~800 RMB/㎡), cannot be punctured or damaged, requires custom sizing
- Applications: Ultra-low temperature cold storages below -60℃, pharmaceutical cold chain, micro cold storages with extremely limited space
2. Phenolic Resin Board
- Performance: Thermal conductivity 0.020~0.025 W/(m·K), B1 fire rating, temperature resistance from -150℃ to 200℃
- Advantages: Combines fire resistance and insulation, resistant to high and low temperatures, good moisture resistance
- Disadvantages: High brittleness, prone to chipping, relatively high cost
- Applications: Special cold storages with alternating high and low temperatures, chemical cold storages

3. Niche/Traditional Materials
- Rice Husk Insulation: Used in traditional agricultural cold storages, extremely low cost but requires annual replacement of fill material; now largely obsolete
- Bio-based Foam Materials (New in 2026): Eco-friendly biodegradable materials based on polylactic acid/bamboo fiber; currently used only in high-end pilot projects
Selection Recommendations:
1. Prioritize polyurethane: If budget is sufficient and insulation energy efficiency requirements are high → choose polyurethane spray foam/insulated panels
2. Budget-limited, choose XPS: For small to medium medium-temperature storages, choose extruded polystyrene boards for better cost-effectiveness
3. High fire protection requirements: Use rock wool as a fire-resistant layer, while keeping polyurethane as the main insulation
4. Ultra-low temperature scenarios: For cold storages below -60℃, choose vacuum insulation panels (VIP)
