With the rapid development of cold chain logistics, more and more fresh produce wholesalers, catering companies, and pharmaceutical firms are building their own cold storage facilities. However, building a cold storage is not as simple as putting up a shed and installing an air conditioner; it is a precise engineering project. Many business owners fail to calculate the costs properly in the early stages, only to find high energy consumption or even damaged goods after completion, paying a costly "tuition fee." To build a cold storage that is both efficient and cost-effective, several key steps must be planned in advance.

Site Selection: Avoid "Inherently Flawed" Locations
Building a cold storage is like constructing a house; if the foundation is not solid, everything else will be wasted. When selecting a site, first avoid areas with heat sources and direct sunlight, such as walls with severe western exposure, which will cause refrigeration equipment to run overloaded for extended periods, driving up energy consumption. Secondly, the site must avoid low-lying areas to ensure proper drainage. Additionally, confirm in advance whether the site's power supply capacity meets the requirements of the refrigeration units, and whether the floor load-bearing capacity can support shelving and forklift operations.
Insulation Design: The "Down Jacket" of the Cold Storage Cannot Be Skimped
The insulation system is the core of energy efficiency in a cold storage. Walls and roofs typically use polyurethane insulation panels, with thickness determined by the storage temperature: generally, cool rooms require at least 10 cm, while freezer rooms need 15 cm or more. Beyond the panels themselves, sealing of joint seams is equally critical. Poor-quality sealant strips or improper installation can lead to cold air leakage, not only increasing electricity bills but also causing condensation and icing near the doors. Floor insulation should not be overlooked, especially for low-temperature freezers; if the floor slab lacks proper frost-heave protection, severe consequences such as floor cracking and structural deformation may occur in winter.
Equipment Selection: Avoid "Overkill"
The refrigeration unit is the heart of the cold storage, and its selection must precisely match the storage capacity and product turnover. Some owners, eager for rapid cooling, blindly choose high-capacity units, resulting in overly aggressive temperature drops that can easily damage the skin of fruits and vegetables. The current trend is to adopt variable-frequency compressors and intelligent temperature control systems that automatically adjust power based on actual load, ensuring temperature stability within ±0.5°C while significantly reducing electricity costs. Additionally, special cold storages such as those for pharmaceuticals must be equipped with a "one active, one standby" dual system and a backup generator to prevent cargo loss in the event of sudden power outages.

Construction and Acceptance: Details Determine Service Life
The most common pitfalls in cold storage construction are piping and drainage. Refrigeration pipes passing through walls must be properly insulated and sealed; otherwise, the cold bridge effect can cause condensation and mold inside the walls. If drain pipes are not equipped with anti-freeze heating wires, they may freeze and clog in winter, leading to water accumulation inside the storage. During acceptance, in addition to checking the thermometer, you can use a "field method": place a cup of hot water inside the storage and observe whether frost forms on the cup wall after half an hour, which directly reflects the insulation and sealing performance of the enclosure.
Building a cold storage is a long-term investment. Spending more effort on design and material selection in the early stages often results in annual savings on electricity and maintenance costs that exceed the initial additional investment.
