Application Cases of Cold Chain in Different Industries
Although the overall goals of cold chain logistics management in the food and pharmaceutical industries are similar, there are some important differences between the two that make the way cold chain solutions are implemented in these industries quite distinct.
Cold Chain in the Food Industry
Primary purpose and focus: Maintaining freshness, taste, texture, nutritional value, and safety, while preventing spoilage and food waste.
Regulatory requirements: Food safety standards such as HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act), and various national food safety agencies (e.g., FDA, USDA) regulate the food cold chain to prevent contamination and ensure food safety.
Temperature control: Temperature control varies by food type. Refrigerated transport keeps products at temperatures above freezing, typically between 1°C and 10°C (34°F to 50°F), and is commonly used for fresh produce, dairy products, and beverages that require refrigeration but would be damaged by freezing. Frozen transport keeps products such as ice cream, frozen vegetables, meat, seafood, frozen prepared foods, and some specialty ingredients at temperatures below freezing, typically between -18°C and -30°C (0°F to -22°F).
Packaging: As mentioned above, common packaging for food and beverage products typically includes insulated containers, gel packs and dry ice, thermal blankets, and liners to prevent spoilage and physical damage.
Pharmaceutical Cold Chain
Primary purpose and focus: Maintaining the stability, efficacy, and safety of temperature-sensitive products such as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biologics (drugs derived from animal, plant, or microbial cells), and other medical products, while ensuring these products are safe and compliant with regulatory requirements.
Regulatory requirements: The pharmaceutical cold chain is strictly guided by regulatory frameworks such as Good Distribution Practice (GDP), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), and regulatory bodies including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure product efficacy, potency, purity, and safety.
Temperature control: Many healthcare products require transport at refrigerated or frozen temperatures. Additionally, some pharmaceuticals, biological samples, and genetic materials for research require transport in cryogenic environments, typically below -238°F (-150°C).
Packaging: In addition to insulated containers, gel packs and dry ice, thermal blankets, and liners, pharmaceuticals often use vacuum insulation panels and smart packaging with embedded sensors to protect against light, moisture, impact, and tampering.
