What Are the Two Types of Cold Chain?

The cold chain is mainly classified in the following ways: by temperature control method and by the temperature range required by the product. 

1. By Temperature Control Method

This classification focuses on how the cooling system is powered during transportation and storage. 

Active Cold Chain: Relies on powered mechanical refrigeration systems (e.g., refrigerated trucks, external refrigeration units) to actively monitor and precisely maintain temperature. They are ideal for large-volume shipments and long-distance transportation. 

Passive Cold Chain: Relies on insulated containers (e.g., polystyrene foam boxes) and refrigerants (e.g., ice packs or dry ice) to maintain temperature without external power. They are suitable for small-volume shipments or short-distance transportation. 

2. By Temperature Requirement

This classification method categorizes the cold chain based on the specific temperature required by the goods. 

Chilled (Refrigerated) Cold Chain: Maintains temperatures between [temperature range] and is commonly used for dairy products, fresh produce, and most routine vaccines. 

Frozen Cold Chain: Keeps goods at temperatures below zero, typically between [temperature range] and is used for frozen foods, certain pharmaceuticals, and biological materials.
