The dimensional design of cold room racks is not a simple combination of length, width, and height; it is a core engineering task directly related to cold room space utilization, refrigeration efficiency, and operations. Given the high construction and operating costs of cold rooms, rack dimension planning must precisely match cargo characteristics and the cold room environment.

In terms of standard dimensional parameters, the height of cold room racks typically ranges from 2 to 10 meters, with some high-bay automated cold rooms reaching over 12 meters to fully utilize vertical space. The rack length (span) generally ranges from 1 to 4 meters, with each level typically designed to hold 2 to 3 standard pallets. The rack depth usually ranges from 0.6 to 1.5 meters, depending on the actual pallet size. Regarding load capacity, the per-level load of cold room racks typically ranges from 500 kg to 2,000 kg, and some heavy-duty beam racks can support up to 2.5 tons per beam, meeting the storage requirements for high-density goods such as frozen meat and seafood.
However, the dimensional design of cold room racks must strictly adhere to the principle of "airflow circulation." A ventilation gap of at least 50 cm must be reserved between the top of the rack and the ceiling (or the air outlet of the cooling unit) to prevent cold air from accumulating at the top and causing higher temperatures at lower levels. A distance of 20 to 30 cm should be maintained between the rack and the cold room walls to prevent condensation on the walls from affecting the goods. The width of the working aisles between racks should be determined based on the handling equipment: at least 1 meter for manual pallet jacks, 1.2 to 1.5 meters for electric forklifts, and 2.5 to 3.5 meters for main aisles used by large forklifts. Additionally, the rack height should be designed in multiples of 75 mm to allow flexible adjustment of shelf levels.
For different storage scenarios, rack dimensions also vary with customization. For example, in some cold rooms within food industrial parks, stackable racks with standard dimensions of 1.4 meters high and 1.1 meters wide are commonly used, with a single-pallet load capacity of 1.5 tons. Through combinations of three to five depths, these racks achieve high-density storage while ensuring convenient loading and unloading. For fruit and vegetable goods, considering the load limits of cartons, the shelf height and stacking height are usually controlled at around 2 meters. Frozen products, due to their dense stacking, can reach heights of over 2.5 meters.
The dimensional planning of cold room racks must also consider material properties in low-temperature environments. Since steel is prone to "cold brittleness" at low temperatures, the wall thickness of rack uprights and beams typically needs to be increased by 10% to 15% compared to racks used at ambient temperatures (e.g., from 1.5 mm to 1.8 mm or more), and stiffeners should be added at key stress points. Therefore, when determining cold room rack dimensions, enterprises must comprehensively consider pallet specifications, forklift parameters, refrigeration airflow organization, and the mechanical properties of low-temperature materials. Through scientific customized design, efficient cold room storage can be achieved.
